Every holiday season I make it my mission to come up with a cozy drink I can sip on in the afternoon or evenings when the chill starts to set in. Last year it was my Golden Chai Hot Chocolate. The year prior it was my Hazelnut Chocolate French Press Latte. Before that it was my Coconut Dirty Chai.
This year I’ve actually got TWO! This Gingerbread Turmeric Latte is the first of two cozy (and healthy) holiday drinks hitting the blog this season. It’s got all the right spices to make your kitchen smell like a cookie, except it’s totally dairy free and sweetened naturally with coconut nectar.
The coconut nectar gives a nice molasses-esque kind of flavor to the latte, which I why I suggest using it. Although, you can feel free to sub for honey or maple syrup if you prefer.
Who doesn’t want a cookie in a mug? I mean, COME ON NOW. This is going to be your favorite drink of winter – obvi.
Gingerbread Turmeric Latte
This dairy-free Gingerbread Turmeric Latte is the perfect naturally sweetened treat for winter. Plus it can be made in your blender in less than 5 minutes!
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
- 1/4 teaspoon ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon allspice
- 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon coconut nectar (sub honey or maple syrup)
- 12 oz non dairy milk
Heat a small pot with non dairy milk over high heat until boiling. Once boiling, take off heat and let cool for 2 minutes.
Meanwhile, add all of your spices, coconut oil, and coconut nectar to a blender.
Once the non dairy milk has cooled slightly, pour it into the blender. Blend on high until frothy (about 1 minute).
Pour into a mug and serve with gingerbread men (optional).
If you ask me how I define love I will tell you love is a choice. Sure, it starts as a feeling, but eventually, in any long term committed relationship – it becomes a choice. You decide to love that person day in and day out, even if somedays you don’t quite *feel* like it. You choose it anyway.
I have come to believe that the same is true for self-love. Yes, it must start with a basis of feeling. And yes, I know that finding that basis can be immensely challenging. But once you get over that hump, the rest is choice.
What do I mean by “choosing” yourself? The answer is two pronged. First, I mean that you must prioritize yourself. This means resting when your tired, finding time to exercise, eating like you love yourself, and saying no when you need to. This means finding time to curl up with your favorite book and a mug of gingerbread turmeric latte, and escaping the world. This means you have to remember how important you are to you.
The second prong is the harder of the two (for me, at least). It is the part of choosing yourself that demands your kindness, your softness, each and everyday. It means choosing to love yourself even on the days you feel unloveable. It means using kind words every time you look in the mirror. It means heaping on tons of kindness, even when you feel low.
You must choose yourself.
No one will ever be able to choose you in the way you can choose yourself. No one is made to fill that hole in your life. You have to step up and do it. You have to take care of your heart and your mind because they are yours and they are fragile.
Choose self love. Choose yourself. xo.
